What Is Bone Scan (Whole Body / 3-Phase)?
A bone scan is a nuclear imaging test that creates detailed pictures of your bones using a small amount of radioactive material (tracer). The tracer is absorbed by your bones, and areas of rapid bone growth or repair appear as bright spots on the scan. Our Siemens Dual-Head E.cam provides exceptional image quality for accurate diagnosis.
Why Is It Needed?
Bone scans are essential for detecting bone cancer, metastatic cancer spread to bones, fractures (especially stress fractures), bone infections (osteomyelitis), arthritis, Paget's disease, avascular necrosis, and evaluating unexplained bone pain. The test is highly sensitive and can detect problems months earlier than regular X-rays.
How Does It Work?
You receive an injection of a radioactive tracer (Tc-99m-MDP) that travels through your bloodstream and is absorbed by your bones. After 2-4 hours, you return for imaging. You lie on the scanning table while the gamma camera slowly moves over your body, capturing detailed images of your entire skeleton. For 3-phase scans, immediate images are also taken.
