What Is Thyroid Scan & Uptake?
A thyroid scan creates images of your thyroid gland after you receive a small amount of radioactive iodine or technetium. The thyroid uptake test measures how much of the radioactive material your thyroid absorbs, which indicates how active your thyroid is. Together, these tests provide comprehensive information about thyroid structure and function.
Why Is It Needed?
These tests are essential for diagnosing hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, thyroid nodules, goiter, thyroiditis, and thyroid cancer. They help determine if nodules are "hot" (overactive) or "cold" (underactive), guide treatment decisions, and evaluate thyroid function before and after treatment.
How Does It Work?
For uptake, you swallow a capsule containing radioactive iodine-123. Measurements are taken at 4-6 hours and again at 24 hours using a probe or camera over your thyroid. The thyroid scan is performed using the gamma camera to create detailed images of the thyroid gland, showing its size, shape, position, and any nodules.
