What Is Pediatric Nuclear Medicine?
Pediatric nuclear medicine involves specialized imaging procedures adapted for children of all ages, from newborns to teenagers. The same diagnostic tests used in adults can be performed in children, but with modified doses, timing, and child-friendly approaches. Our team is specially trained in pediatric nuclear medicine to ensure your child's safety and comfort.
Why Is It Needed?
Children may need nuclear medicine scans for various reasons: kidney problems, bone pain, fractures, infection detection, thyroid disorders, cancer staging, liver/gallbladder issues, and congenital abnormalities. These scans provide valuable diagnostic information that may not be available from other imaging methods.
How Does It Work?
The procedure is similar to adult scans but with important modifications: radiation doses are carefully calculated based on the child's weight, scanning times may be shorter, and special techniques are used to keep children comfortable and still. Parents can usually stay with the child during the scan. We use distraction techniques, videos, and child-friendly explanations.
