What Is Renal Scan (DTPA / EC / MAG3)?
A renal scan is a nuclear medicine procedure that evaluates how well your kidneys are working by tracking the flow of a radioactive tracer through your kidneys. Different tracers (DTPA for glomerular filtration, DMSA for cortical imaging, MAG3 for tubular function) are used depending on what information is needed.
Why Is It Needed?
Renal scans are crucial for assessing kidney function in cases of high blood pressure, urinary tract infections, kidney stones, suspected kidney blockage, kidney transplant evaluation, and monitoring kidney disease progression. It helps determine if both kidneys are functioning equally and if there are any obstructions.
How Does It Work?
The radioactive tracer is injected through an IV line. The gamma camera takes sequential images as the tracer passes through your kidneys, showing blood flow, filtration, and drainage. For some tests, you may be given a diuretic (water pill) during the scan to evaluate kidney drainage. The computer generates graphs showing kidney function over time.
